Trends

The share of aircraft with GPS error worse than 93 m in each watched area, every day since 1 October 2025; below it, the validation cases.

How to read these charts ↓

Share of aircraft with severe GPS error (worse than 93 m), daily

A new day each morning. All panels share one scale, so levels compare directly.

Hollow dots mark days with under half an area's usual aircraft, when strong jamming may have taken aircraft off the map (why).

Tests from the validation report, drawn from the processed aircraft data. Every test, including what failed

An SBAS outage, from aircraft alone

EGNOS area: 10 m-capable aircraft below 10 m, hourly

9–25 Oct 2025. The European SBAS service had an outage on 13–17 Oct; aircraft relying on it lost 10 m accuracy. An hour is flagged at 60% or more of capable aircraft across the service area. The baseline starts once five earlier days exist.

A storm moves accuracy, not severe GPS error

Northern US and southern Canada (43–55°N): 10 m-capable aircraft below 10 m

Hourly, 11–12 Nov 2025, against the same hours on two quiet days. The G4 storm peaked around 00–06Z on 12 Nov (Kp 8.7).

11–12 Nov 2025Quiet days (16 and 22 Oct)Storm peak

Same area: aircraft worse than 93 m

The severe-error measure on a 0–10% scale. It stays near zero through the storm: space weather degrades accuracy to tens of metres, rarely past 93 m.

Minute-level timing

Bay Area and Central Valley: aircraft with a 93 m-or-worse report, per minute

22 Sep 2026, 17:30–20:45 UTC, 35.5–38.5°N 123.5–119.5°W. Two bursts: about 18:00Z and 19:52–20:12Z. An FAA flight advisory (PMSRCA GPS 26-03) scheduled a Point Mugu Sea Range GPS test that day, 18:30–20:29Z, reaching well past the Bay Area: the second burst falls inside it, the first starts 22 minutes before it. Kp stayed at or below 1.7 all day.

Share of aircraft with severe GPS error (worse than 93 m), daily, 9–25 Oct 2025

Aircraft still degraded after leaving interference elsewhere are left out. Five known interference areas and one quiet high-latitude control; all panels share a 0–60% scale.

Which aircraft stay degraded after leaving interference

Over-representation among aircraft still degraded after leaving interference

9–25 Oct 2025, 4,025 aircraft-days on which an aircraft was still degraded after leaving interference. Ratio = a type's share of those days ÷ its share of all aircraft-days; 1× means in line with traffic. Types with at least 40 such days. A350s and A380s are shown apart, in grey: their high ratios most likely reflect how they report accuracy (they flag it as poor when a single satellite is marked degraded, and stay degraded longer; Validation), not lasting harm. Among the other types, long-haul widebodies stand out, which points to route exposure on the Gulf and Asia corridors.

NISAR: reading the processor's tables instead of the images

Detection maps from the NISAR work stay private until the method is validated. What can be shown is what the method costs, measured over a 30-day regional run.

Radar image files
~24 GB/day
what an image-based watch would stream
Processor RFI tables
~0.85 GB/day
what the table method reads (measured)
First-pass screen
~1.4 MB/day
one small QA file per pass

How to read these charts

The first chart updates every morning from the automatic daily run. The rest are tests from the validation report, drawn from the processed aircraft data. Hover or use the arrow keys for values; every chart also has a table.

The daily chart. From the daily pipeline, backfilled to 1 October 2025: automatic and not reviewed by a person, apart from the 20 validated days. A new day is added each morning. Aircraft still degraded after leaving interference elsewhere are left out. The same measure and areas as the validation chart further down, plus Cyprus–Levant and the Strait of Hormuz / Gulf of Oman (added 22 Oct 2026; little ADS-B coverage over Iran, so it mostly measures the Omani and UAE side and the airways over water).

Hollow dots mark days when an area had under half its usual aircraft (median of its previous 14 days). Strong jamming can stop aircraft sending a position at all, so they drop out instead of counting as degraded, and the share on those days comes from the aircraft that kept a position. On 9 May 2026 three in four aircraft crossing the southern Baltic lost their ADS-B position (validation notes, verdict 34). The map's "Fewer aircraft than usual" view shows where.
